The Museum
The Open-air Museum in Kouřim is the only museum in the Czech Republic focusing on various ethnographic regions. The Museum houses collections of cultural heritage of vernacular architecture from Central, East and West Bohemia. The Museum offers an immediate comparison of the various regional types of vernacular architecture from the 17th to the 19th century. Fourteen houses and farming buildings can be found here, as well as lesser architectural objects. The Museum offers ethnographic and other accompanying programs throughout the year.
In 2012, the realization of a large project was commenced with the aim to complete the Museum, which includes a change of concept. The Museum will be converted into the Museum of the Czech Village, housing architectural sights and objects and presenting rural life in the early modern times to early 20th century with regards to social and regional specifics.
The Museum is part of the Regional Museum in Kolín, semi-budgetary organization of the Central Bohemian region. It is a member of the Czech Association of Open-air Museums. The Department of Preservation of Traditional Folk Culture operates as part of the Museum as well.
The town of Kouřim is also home to the Museum of Kouřim Region, housing an exhibition on the history of the region, and to the early Gothic St Stephen’s Basilica, featuring the valuable medieval crypt of St Catherine and a bell tower with unique inverted bells.
